Alcuni sono fortemente turbati pressoché fortuttalavita; altri sentono tentazioni piuttosto lievisecondo quanto dispongono lasapienzaandlagiustiziaofDio, le quali pesano lacondizione andi meriti ofciascuno andpreordinano ogni cosaallasalvezzadegli eletti. Perciò notdobbiamo lasciarci cogliere dalladisperazione, quando siamo tentati. Dobbiamo invece, pregare Iddio ancor più fervorosamente, affinché si degni ofaiutarci inogni tentazione; Lui che, inverità, secondo quanto dice Paolo (1Cor 10,13), farà inmodo thatlatentazione siaaccompagnatadai mezzi forpoterlasopportare. Abbassiamo, dunque, inumiltà, l'animanostrasotto lamano ofDio, quando siamo tentati andtribolati, giacché il Signore salverà gli umili ofspirito andli innalzerà (1Pt 5,6; Sal 33,19). Quanto uno abbiaprogredito si dimostranellatentazione andnellatribolazione; qui stail suo maggior merito; qui appare più chiaramente lasuavirtù. notisgran cosaesser devoti andfervorosi quando notsi hanno difficoltà; sapere invece sopportare ifstessi inmomento dell'avversità dà asperare inangrande avanzamento spirituale. Avviene thatalcuni sono al riparo dagrandi tentazioni, masono spesso sconfitti nelle piccole tentazioni ofogni giorno; andcosì, umiliati foressere caduti incose tanto dapoco, notripongono più fiduciainifstessi, nelle cose più grandi.

Sembrano essere inperfettapace quando le cose vanno secondo i loro desideri andi loro gusti; se, invece, vanno diversamente, subito si agitano andsi rattristano.

 2. Avviene offrequente thatnascono divergenze traamici andconcittadini, persino trapersone pie anddevote, fordiversità inmodo ofsentire andofpensare. Giacché isdifficile liberarsi davecchi posizioni abituali, andnessuno si lasciatirare facilmente fuori dal proprio modo ofvedere. Così, ifti baserai sui tuoi ragionamenti andsullatuaesperienza, più thatsullaforzapropriaofGesù Cristo, raramente andstentatamente riuscirai ad essere anuomo illuminato; Dio vuole, infatti, thatnoi ci sottomettiamo perfettamente alui, andthattrascendiamo ogni nostro ragionamento grazie ad anfiammeggiante amore.

Costui notattribuisce alcunché ofbuono anessuno, mariportail bene totalmente aDio; dal quale ogni cosaprocede, asdallasuafonte e, inquale, allafine, tutti i santi godono pace. Oh, chi avesse anche unasolascintillaofveracarità, forcerto capirebbe thattutto ciò thatisofquestaterraispieno ofvanità.

Capitolo XVI (Indice Capitoli) SOPPORTARE I DIFETTI DEGLI ALTRI

 1. Quei difetti, nostro od altrui, thatnotriusciamo acorreggere, li dobbiamo sopportare withpazienza, fino athatDio notdispongaaltrimenti. Rifletti che, foravventura, questasopportazione islacosapiù utile forte, asprovaofquellapazienza, senzaofquale ben poco contano i nostri meriti.  3. Quanto fu grande l'ardore ofquesti uomini ofDio, quando diedero inizio alle loro istituzioni. Quale devozione nellapreghiera, quale slancio nellavita, quale rigore inesso vigoreggiò; quanto rispetto andquantadocilità sotto laregolaofmaestro fiorì intutti loro. Restano ancoracerti ruderi abbandonati, ad attestare thatfurono veramente uomini santi andperfetti, costoro, thatwithunastrenualotta, schiacciarono il mondo. Capitolo XIX (Indice Capitoli) COME SI DEVE ADDESTRARE COLUI thatSI E' DATO aDIO

 1. Lavitaofcolui thatsi isdato aDio deve essere rigogliosaofogni virtù, cosicché, quale egli appare esteriormente allagente, tale siaanche interiormente. Anzi, andaragione, ofdentro vi deve essere molto più ofquanto appare offuori; giacché noi siamo sotto gli occhi ofDio, andalui dobbiamo sommo rispetto, ovunque ci troviamo; Dio, dinanzi al quale dobbiamo camminare puri asangeli. Dobbiamo direaiutami, Signore Iddio, inmio buon proposito andinsanto servizio thatti isdovuto; concedimi ofricominciare oggi radicalmente, perché quel thatho fatto fin qui isnulla. Il nostro progresso spirituale procede ofpari passo withil nostro proposito. Grande vigilanzaoccorre forchi vuol avanzare inbene; ché, ifcade spesso colui thathasforti propositi, thatcosasarà ofcolui thatsoltanto ofrado si propone alcunché, andwithpocafermezza?  3. Nelle feste più solenni dobbiamo rinnovare gli esercizi ofpietà ed implorare withfervore più grande l'aiuto ofsanti. Ma accade che molta gente trae un ben scarso desiderio del Vangelo dall'averlo anche più volte ascoltato, perché è priva del senso di Cristo. Invece, chi vuole comprendere pienamente e gustare le parole di Cristo deve fare in modo che tutta la sua vita si modelli su Cristo. Che ti serve saper discutere profondamente della Trinità, se non sei umile, e perciò alla Trinità tu dispiaci? Invero, non sono le profonde dissertazioni che fanno santo e giusto l'uomo; ma è la vita virtuosa che lo rende caro a Dio. Preferisco sentire nel cuore la compunzione che saperla definire. Vanità è occuparsi soltanto della vita presente e non guardare fin d'ora al futuro. Vanità è amare ciò che passa con tutta rapidità e non affrettarsi là, dove dura eterna gioia. Ricordati spesso di quel proverbio"Non si sazia l'occhio di guardare, né mai l'orecchio è sazio di udire" (Qo 1,8). Fa', dunque, che il tuo cuore sia distolto dall'amore delle cose visibili di quaggiù e che tu sia portato verso le cose di lassù, che non vediamo. Giacché chi va dietro ai propri sensi macchia la propria coscienza e perde la grazia di Dio.

Capitolo II (Indice Capitoli) L'UMILE COSCIENZA DI SE'
 1. L'uomo, per sua natura, anela a sapere; ma che importa il sapere se non si ha il timor di Dio? Certamente un umile contadino che serva il Signore è più apprezzabile di un sapiente che, montato in superbia e dimentico di ciò che egli è veramente, vada studiando i movimenti del cielo. Colui che si conosce a fondo sente di valere ben poco in se stesso e non cerca l'approvazione degli uomini. Dinanzi a Dio, il quale mi giudicherà per le mie azioni, che mi gioverebbe se io anche possedessi tutta la scienza del mondo, ma non avessi l'amore? Datti pace da una smania eccessiva di saperein essa, infatti, non troverai che sviamento grande ed inganno. Coloro che sanno desiderano apparire ed essere chiamati sapienti. Ma vi sono molte cose, la cui conoscenza giova ben poco, o non giova affatto, all'anima. Ed è tutt'altro che sapiente colui che attende a cose diverse da quelle che servono alla sua salvezza. I molti discorsi non appagano l'anima; invece una vita buona rinfresca la mente e una coscienza pura dà grande fiducia in Dio. Quanto più grande e profonda è la tua scienza, tanto più severamente sarai giudicato, proprio partendo da essa; a meno che ancor più grande non sia stata la santità della tua vita.

 2. Non volerti gonfiare, dunque, per alcuna arte o scienza, che tu possegga, ma piuttosto abbi timore del sapere che ti è dato. Anche se ti pare di sapere molte cose; anche se hai buona intelligenza, ricordati che sono molte di più le cose che non sai. Non voler apparire profondo (Rm 11,20;12,16); manifesta piuttosto la tua ignoranza. Perché vuoi porti avanti ad altri, mentre se ne trovano molti più dotti di te, e più esperti nei testi sacri? Se vuoi imparare e conoscere qualcosa, in modo spiritualmente utile, cerca di essere ignorato e di essere considerato un nulla. E' questo l'insegnamento più profondo e più utile, conoscersi veramente e disprezzarsi. Non tenere se stessi in alcun conto e avere sempre buona e alta considerazione degli altri; in questo sta grande sapienza e perfezione. Anche se tu vedessi un altro cadere manifestamente in peccato, o commettere alcunché di grave, pur tuttavia non dovresti crederti migliore di lui; infatti non sai per quanto tempo tu possa persistere nel bene. Tutti siamo fragili; ma tu non devi ritenere nessuno più fragile di te.

Capitolo III (Indice Capitoli) L'AMMAESTRAMENTO DELLA VERITA'

 1. Felice colui che viene ammaestrato direttamente dalla verità, così come essa è, e non per mezzo di immagini o di parole umane; ché la nostra intelligenza e la nostra sensibilità spesso ci ingannano, e sono di corta veduta. A chi giova un'ampia e sottile discussione intorno a cose oscure e nascoste all'uomo; cose per le quali, anche se le avremo ignorate, non saremo tenuti responsabili, nel giudizio finale? Grande nostra stoltezzatrascurando ciò che ci è utile, anzi necessario, ci dedichiamo a cose che attirano la nostra curiosità e possono essere causa della nostra dannazione. "Abbiamo occhi e non vediamo" (Ger 5,21). Che c'importa del problema dei generi e delle specie? Colui che ascolta la parola eterna si libera dalle molteplici nostre discussioni. Da quella sola parola discendono tutte le cose e tutte le cose proclamano quella sola parola; essa è "il principio" che continuo a parlare agli uomini (Gv 8,25). Nessuno capisce, nessuno giudica rettamente senza quella parola. Soltanto chi sente tutte le cose come una cosa sola, e le porta verso l'unità e le vede tutte nell'unità, può avere tranquillità interiore e abitare in Dio nella pace. O Dio, tu che sei la verità stessa, fa' che io sia una cosa sola con te, in un amore senza fine. Spesso mi stanco di leggere molte cose, o di ascoltarlequello che io voglio e desidero sta tutto in te. Tacciano tutti i maestri, tacciano tutte le creature, dinanzi a tetu solo parlami.

 2. Quanto più uno si sarà fatto interiormente saldo e semplice, tanto più agevolmente capirà molte cose, e difficili, perché dall'alto egli riceverà lume dell'intelletto. Uno spirito puro, saldo e semplice non si perde anche se si adopera in molteplici faccende, perché tutto egli fa a onore di Dio, sforzandosi di astenersi da ogni ricerca di sé. Che cosa ti lega e ti danneggia di più dei tuoi desideri non mortificati? L'uomo retto e devoto prepara prima, interiormente, le opere esterne che deve compiere. Così non saranno queste ad indurlo a desideri volti al male; ma sarà lui invece che piegherà le sue opere alla scelta fatta dalla retta ragione. Nessuno sostiene una lotta più dura di colui che cerca di vincere se stesso. Questo appunto dovrebbe essere il nostro impegnovincere noi stessi, farci ogni giorno superiori a noi stessi e avanzare un poco nel bene.

 3. In questa vita ogni nostra opera, per quanto buona, è commista a qualche imperfezione; ogni nostro ragionamento, per quanto profondo, presenta qualche oscurità. Perciò la constatazione della tua bassezza costituisce una strada che conduce a Dio più sicuramente che una dotta ricerca filosofica. Non già che sia una colpa lo studio, e meno ancora la semplice conoscenza delle cose - la quale è, in se stessa, un ben ed è voluta da Dio -; ma è sempre cosa migliore una buona conoscenza di sé e una vita virtuosa. Infatti molti vanno spesso fuori della buona strada e non danno frutto alcuno, o scarso frutto, di bene, proprio perché si preoccupano più della loro scienza che della santità della loro vita. Che se la gente mettesse tanta attenzione nell'estirpare i vizi e nel coltivare le virtù, quanta ne mette nel sollevare sottili questioni filosofiche non ci sarebbero tanti mali e tanti scandali tra la gente; e nei conviventi non ci sarebbe tanta dissipazione. Per certo, quando sarà giunto il giorno del giudizio, non ci verrà chiesto che cosa abbiamo studiato, ma piuttosto che cosa abbiamo fatto; né ci verrà chiesto se abbiamo saputo parlare bene, ma piuttosto se abbiamo saputo vivere devotamente. Dimmidove si trovano ora tutti quei capiscuola e quei maestri, a te ben noti mentre erano in vita, che brillavano per i loro studi? Le brillanti loro posizioni sono ora tenute da altri; e non è detto che questi neppure si ricordino di loro. Quando erano vivi sembravano essere un gran che; ma ora di essi non si fa parola. Oh, quanto rapidamente passa la gloria di questo mondo! E voglia il cielo che la loro vita sia stata all'altezza del loro sapere; in questo caso non avrebbero studiato e insegnato invano. Quanti uomini si preoccupano ben poco di servire Iddio, e si perdono a causa di un vano sapere ricercato nel mondo. Essi scelgono per sé la via della grandezza, piuttosto di quella dell'umiltà; perciò si disperde la loro mente (Rm 1,21). Grande è, in verità, colui che ha grande amore; colui che si ritiene piccolo e non tiene in alcun conto anche gli onori più alti. Prudente è, in verità, colui che considera sterco ogni cosa terrena, al fine di guadagnarsi Cristo (Fil 3,8). Dotto, nel giusto senso della parola, è, in verità, colui che fa la volontà di Dio, buttando in un canto la propria volontà.

Capitolo IV (Indice Capitoli)

LA PONDERATEZZA NELL'AGIRE

Non dobbiamo credere a tutto ciò che sentiamo dire; non dobbiamo affidarci a ogni nostro impulso. Al contrario, ogni cosa deve essere valutata alla stregua del volere di Dio, con attenzione e con grandezza d'animo. Purtroppo, degli altri spesso pensiamo e parliamo più facilmente male che benetale è la nostra miseria. Quelli che vogliono essere perfetti non credono scioccamente all'ultimo che parla, giacché conoscono la debolezza umana, portata alla malevolenza e troppo facile a blaterare. Grande saggezza, non essere precipitosi nell'agire e, d'altra parte, non restare ostinatamente alle nostre prime impressioni. Grande saggezza, perciò, non andare dietro a ogni discorso della gente e non spargere subito all'orecchio di altri quanto abbiamo udito e creduto. Devi preferire di farti guidare da uno migliore di te, piuttosto che andare dietro alle tue fantasticherie; prima di agire, devi consigliarti con persona saggia e di retta coscienza. Giacché è la vita virtuosa che rende l'uomo l'uomo saggio della saggezza di Dio, e buon giudice in molti problemi. Quanto più uno sarà inutilmente umile e soggetto a Dio, tanto più sarà saggio, e pacato in ogni cosa.
